A Hiker’s Paradise: Exploring Ella’s Most Scenic Waterfalls

Ella is a picturesque town surrounded by misty hills and forests in Sri Lanka’s hill country. It’s a paradise for nature lovers who want to explore the lush landscapes and soak in the laid-back atmosphere of the town. If you want to experience the natural beauty of the Central hills, one of the best things to do in Ella, Sri Lanka is viewing its majestic waterfalls. Travellers can go hiking in Ella to combine adventure with a retreat into nature. Here are some of the must-see waterfalls in Ella, along with some lesser-known ones:

Ravana Falls is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic waterfalls, and is named after the legendary King Ravana from the Indian epic, Ramayana. It stands at a height of 25 metres, and the water flows down from a cliff into a series of pools that are perfect for taking a dip. The waterfall is a marvel during the monsoon season when the water flows in full force.
The hike to Ravana Ella in Sri Lanka is not challenging, and is accessible to all levels of hikers. Located just 6 km from Ella town, you can hike along the main road for about an hour. If you’re looking for some adventure, there’s a less-travelled trail that takes you up the hill. Kital Ella waterfall is a smaller yet eye-catching waterfall that is said to be the source of Ravana Falls. It is becoming popular with tourists looking for new experiences in Ella. This beautiful waterfall plunges 23 metres below. Many hikers on their way to Ella Rock often stop by here, making it a perfect place to rest along the way.

Diyaluma Falls is another must-see cascade and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Ella, Sri Lanka. It is also the second tallest, at 2200 metres, and is known for its multiple tiers. The upper tiers are truly enchanting and unique, with natural infinity pools formed by the waterfall. Diyaluma also offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
You can embark on a waterfall hike to Diyaluma, which is more challenging than Ravana Falls but just as rewarding. Most visitors start the hike from Poonagala village, about an hour’s drive from Ella. The hike to the upper falls takes about 45 minutes to an hour. On the way, you’ll see tea plantations, grasslands, and rocky outcrops. Once you reach the top, you can take a dip in the crystal-clear pools.

Ella Wala Falls is a charming waterfall tucked away in the jungle along the Ella-Wellawaya Road. It’s located about 5 km from Wellawaya Town and flows down 4–5 metres into a natural pool below, perfect for a refreshing dip. This waterfall has gained popularity in recent years, and attracts visitors, especially during holidays. To get there, you’ll have to travel about 20 km along the Ella – Wellawaya Road until you reach the Rathmal Vehera Temple. There is a footpath that involves some rock climbing.
Visitors to the area can choose to stay in several beautiful hotels near Ella, such as Jetwing Kaduruketha in Wellawaya. This eco-luxury resort offers scenic views of the hills and paddy fields, with amenities such as a spa and pool.

Lanka Ella Falls is located about 1 km from Bambarakanda Falls – the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It’s one of the few waterfalls that remains untouched by human activity due to its secluded location and can only be accessed on foot. The Lanka Ella waterfall is named for the teardrop-shaped rock pool below, which resembles the outline of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, this pool is known to be quite deep, and is not suitable for swimming. To reach the waterfall from Kalupahana, take the road to Ohiya via Bambarakanda Falls, which takes about 30–40 minutes. You’ll need to trek about 1km through the forest from the road leading to Bambarakanda Falls to reach this beautiful spot.
